Commonwealth games 2010 which is scheduled to take place in Delhi are the nineteenth commonwealth games. It is the first time that the Commonwealth Games will be held in India. In fact, it is only the second time that the event is going to be held in Asia (after 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).The games are to be played between 3 October and 14 October across the 14 existing and newly built stadiums spread across Delhi. For the 11 days, life in this part of the world will come to a complete halt as athletes from as many as 72 nations are to lock horns in 17 of the extremely demanding types of games for much coveted gold, silver and bronze medals at stake.

Organized every four years, commonwealth games are the third-largest multi-sport event in the world next only to the Summer Olympic Games and the Asian Games. The Games are supervised by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). It is CGF that also controls the sporting programs and selects the host cities. The host city is selected from across the Commonwealth. So far, eighteen cities from seven countries have hosted it.
The event was first organized in 1930 under the title of the British Empire Games. The event was rechristened the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, the British Commonwealth Games in 1970, and commonwealth games (its current title) in 1978. There are only six teams that have attended every Commonwealth Games. These countries are Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. Australia holds the record for topping the medal tally for ten games while England has achieved the same for seven times and Canada for one.
At present, there are 54 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, and 71 teams participate in the event.
2010 commonwealth games
The 2010 commonwealth games are unique in more ways than one. Apart from being organized in India for the first time, it is also going to be the biggest of all the commonwealth games with number of countries participating soaring up to 72. A total of US $ 1.6 billion has been spent on the preparation of the event by the Indian government. A number of flyovers, over bridges and railway lines have been constructed to meet the transportation demand that the city will face during the games. Apart from this, a special games village, with top drawer facilities has been set up in the city to provide accommodation to a large influx of people during the games.
